As a current Master of Science in Telecommunications Engineering student at UT Dallas, I am applying for the PhD program in the same area.

After two years studying and working as RA in UT Dallas EE department, I strengthened my will of continuing my study in this fast-growing, high-spirit Engineering school. Projects I worked on are cutting-edge and closely related to industry, and classes I took are of high quality and given by excellent faculties.

First of all, it is the extremely rewarding experience working in the Lab of Dr. BLA BLA that makes me a practiced engineer in telecommunication. Being part of the group doing three complete industry projects exposes me to the entire design flow of wireless transmitters and receivers using different modulation schemes including DQPSK, QAM and C4FM. Implementing modulation, demodulation and timing recovery algorithms using Xilinx FPGA, TI DSP, DRP and A/D D/A, building test benches, I gained better understanding of wireless communication systems, intensely practiced developing and debugging skills at both hardware and software level. Also, being able to implement a lot of algorithms and build testing devices for the system I worked on, for example, bit error detector and interfacing between FPGA, PC and DSP with RS232, SPI and Ethernet (UDP), greatly improved my learning skills, and more importantly, my ability to put thoughts and knowledge into practice. This experience I treasure very much.

Second of all, taking several classes in networking and DSP (Algorism aspect of Telecom Network, Performance of Computer Networks and Systems, Advanced Computer Network, DSP, Digital Image processing) thickened my knowledge boundary. Not only am I experienced with hardware and data link level, but also have considerable understanding of upper layers and DSP algorithms. Classes and faculties are state-of-art, and I am sure I could receive the best instruction. The assignments and program projects are all done with my own effort, although pains-taking, I consider it greatly worth the hard work. Writing simulations in MATLAB, C, Java and using LabView, etc, I could master these languages and tools. I could confidently say I am well trained and deserves my master’s degree.

Third of all, I would like to mention my involvement into the rich academic atmosphere here in UT Dallas. I joined in IEEE UTD chapter when I started my study here and did lots of paper reading, I am an active member of Linux user group, and also go to the lectures given by lecturers invited by the School of Engineering. Impressed as I am, UT Dallas is a University where thoughts are extremely active and creativity and growth of individuals are highly emphasized. Walking in the corridors of ECS building, all the posters of current works and news of publications really give me a thirst for more knowledge, motivates me to study further.

Finally, was I to be admitted, I would focus my research on wireless, networking and, if possible, security aspect of telecommunication networks, where my interest lies.

My master’s program goes by as quite a rewarding and pleasant time. I could not find any excuse not to carry on my learning into the next level. Humans have limits but knowledge has none. I really wish I could stand at the pinnacle, and I can see it very clearly based on the shoulder of UT Dallas.
